SODIQ Taiwo, a former number one ranked squash player in Nigeria, has called for regular competitions for up coming squash players to attain full potential.
Taiwo said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Lagos.
According to him, engaging squash players in regular competitions will further improve their skills and propel them toward a successful career.
“Although some enthusiasts are doing a lot in terms of organising tournaments, a gesture I appreciate, but we can still do more.
“Regular competitions still remains the only way a player can assess his or her performance and work on areas that need to be worked on,” the player said.
Taiwo lamented that rather than being engaged in competition, many upcoming squash players were distracted and no longer had long and successful careers.
“Honestly I know they try, but there are lots of distractions unlike our days when the likes of Gbenga Adeyi, Tunde Ajagbe started out.
“The internet is not helping, there are lots of distraction, if care is not taken any hardworking player may have reasons to start comparing their lives with fraudsters.
“They may be tempted to take the easy way out; I have had a very long and successful career thankfully, but some of them haven’t reached their peak and they are on the decline already,” Taiwo said. (NAN)
