SUPERMARKETS on Lagos Island on Tuesday were filled with shoppers ahead of the Valentine’s Day celebration.
Also, some restaurants located on Admiralty Road, Lekki, Phase 1, redesigned their space to suit the themes of Valentine.
A News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondent who visited Ebeano Supermarket in Lekki, observed that there was traffic congestion in and around the store.
There were also long queues at the cashier points at the supermarket as shoppers lined up to pay for their products.
Tony Uzoma, one of the shoppers in the supermarket, said that he came to the store to shop for gift items for his friends.
He said that he was amused by the crowd in the store adding that the upcoming Valentines’ day contributed to the crowd.
“I came to shop for items for my friends to mark the Valentine’s Day because I made them a promise that I would get each of them gifts.
“To my amusement, I came here and saw a lot of crowd but I didn’t allow that to discourage me as I have made a promise and I must fulfill it.
“I’m glad I have got the items I need as I look forward to spending the special day with my friends,” he said.
Ikechukwu Osuwah, a father of four, said that he was in the store to buy groceries for his family as he intends to be home all day.
“I’m using tomorrow to spend quality time with my family as I have always been looking forward to this particular day every year.
“My work takes me away from my family but this year is different because I have to make extra efforts to ensure that I have time off during this period.
“I’m getting groceries and some gifts but I’m going to be home all day with my family so as to maximise the little time I have to spend with them,” he said.
At N.Y Supermarket, in Lekki, shoppers found it difficult to get their cars parked at the parking lot due to lack of space.
Joseph Ebune, a shopper at the store, said that he had to park his car miles away as it was difficult getting a space in the parking lot.
“I don’t think I have the patience to wait on the queue so I might have to come back early in the morning to make my purchase.
“Most supermarkets in the area are full to the brim, so, I might order things online because there is a possibility that the queue tomorrow might be worse,” he said.
A staff of Freedom Supermarket who pleaded anonymity, revealed that the supermarket had tripled its sales in the days leading up to Valentine’s Day.
He noted that the boost in sales was due to the surge and rush by customers to buy products for their loved ones. (NAN)
