AL-QALAM University, Katsina, has sent a draft Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to Katsina State government asking to use public hospitals for students’ clinical training.
The varsity’s spokesman, Malam Akilu Abubakar, stated in Katsina that the draft MoU was sent to the Ministry of Health as a prelude to the effective take-off of the varsity’s College of Allied Health Sciences.
The MoU would enable the university to meet requirements for the accreditation of relevant courses by the relevant authorities and enhance the transfer of knowledge to students.
To be awarded a Bachelor’s degree by the College of Allied Health Sciences it is mandatory for students to undergo supervised clinical training to acquaint them with current trends, he stated.
Abubakar quoted the vice-chancellor, Prof. Nasiru Musa-Yauri, as saying that a critical aspect of the MoU was for government to allow students to acquire training at its three hospitals.
The hospitals are the General Hospital, Katsina, the Rimi Specialist Hospital and the Turai Yar’adua Maternal and Children Hospital in the state capital.
He added that the proposed College of Allied Health Sciences would offer degree programmes in Nursing Science, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Radiology, Optometry, Physiotherapy and Public Health Science.
Abubakar also stated that the Commissioner for Health, Malam Yakubu Shehu-Danja, commended Al-Qalam University for seeking to collaborate with the ministry on the training of its students.
“The commissioner promised to set up a team of specialised officials in the ministry to study the draft MoU and produce a document acceptable to both parties,’’ Abubakar added. (NAN)
