THE Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK), says it is set to establish three academic programmes in its Community Health department in the 2023 academic session.

The Vice-Chancellor (V-C) of the University, Prof. Suleiman Bala-Mohammed, made this known on Friday when the Chairman, Community Health Practitioners Registration Board of Nigeria, Mallam Sule Galadima-Toma and his team paid him a courtesy visit.

He listed the programmes as Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) Community Health, B.Sc. Community Health Education and Post Graduate Diploma (PGD) in Community Health Programmes.

The V-C described the visit as apt and timely adding that the programmes would align with the new College of Medical and Health Sciences of the institution which would also take effect in 2023.

He said the university would immediately commence the processes of mounting the programmes with quality standard and in accordance with Nigeria University Commission (NUC) benchmark.

Bala-Mohammed, therefore, enjoined the Director of Research, Innovation and Enterprise, Prof. Yakubu Ngwai and the Director of Health Services, Dr Ibrahim Madaki to liaise with the board and come up with a work plan and timeline for the commencement of the programmes.

Earlier, Galadima-Toma informed the vice-chancellor that they were in the university on advocacy and to solicit for management’s approval to mount the three key programmes in the university.

He said the aim was to improve the training standard of the over 400,000 community health workers in Nigeria.

The board chairman regretted that prospective community health workers travel to Cotonou in the Republic of Benin to study.

“But these programmes in NSUK will bring succor to a lot of people who want to study and upgrade their knowledge,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the highlight of the event was the presentation of approved NUC benchmark to the vice-chancellor. (NAN)
