OJABA Integrated Veterinary Service, has blamed high mortality rate in poultry farms on ineffective, improper vaccination, poor management of birds in terms of hygiene and quality of feed, among others.

Dr Jorce Egboja, Managing Director of the organisation, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja.

Egboja, who identified disease outbreak as a contributing factor, advised farmers to follow vaccination programmes accordingly and use vaccines rightly.

She said that many diseases could be prevented when the birds were vaccinated at the right time and the use of the right dose.

“Apart from diseases, sometimes the quality of feed can cause mortality because there is an astronomical hike in the price of feed.

“So, a farmer that has been buying good quality feed can decide to patronise a cheaper feed for economic reasons.

“Probably the cheaper feed the farmer changes to may not adopt proper quality control and this poses danger on the birds.

“Most farmers cannot afford to buy a bag of feed for about N10,000, so, they look for feed that is N7,000 devoid of quality control,” she said.(NAN)
