The All Progressives Congress, APC, Senators appeal to the Labour Party, LP, to pledge support to Aswaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, president-elect, has been rejected by Julius Abure, LP national chairman.
The APC senators elected into the 10th Senate led by Senators Godswill Akpabio and Ali Ndume, made the appeal when they visited the Labour Party national office in a quest to stabilize the polity.
During the visit, Sen Akpabio noted that people may wonder what he was doing at the meeting because of the differences that may exist between the two parties.
Stating that “what is morally right may not be politically expedient and what is politically expedient may not be morally right”, he, however, used the opportunity to call on all the political parties that contested in the 2023 general election to sheath their sword and come together and line up behind Aswaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the president-elect in order to give leadership to Nigeria in a very fragile situation like this so that we can stabilize the polity and also bring development to Nigeria
According to him, there are so many issues in the country, problems that can only be solved when we come together. “They say united we stand but divided we fall. So I want to urge the LP because I believe you went into this election as a result of your love for Nigeria.
“So come together and join us so that we can build a united and viral nation”
He said that the reality was that both the LP and APC were composed of Nigerians, adding: “And as far as we are concerned, all of us must save Nigeria, if we don’t save Nigeria, then there is no future for our children.
“Where I come from, in my community, when a child is born, they say the child is born to that community and not to the parents. So that child is born to serve that community.
“So, today, the LP has produced a few senators for the 10th Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and you have produced them not to serve Labour Party, but to serve Nigeria that is why I am very proud that many of them already belong to the stability group to stabilize the polity, stabilize the 10th Senate, and at the same time save the country.
“So we came to tell the father to thank you for producing these good children. And for those that have not yet joined us, we urge you to join us soonest so we can stabilize the nation, stabilize the polity, and move the nation forward,” he said.
On his own part, Senator Ndume described the visit as a mark of appreciation and also solicited the LP’s support for the stabilization movement comprising 69 senators including some members of the LP.
Similarly, Sen David Umahi commended all the senators who were present during the visit and said that it was a sign that democracy in the country was developing and growing beyond party affiliations.
Responding, Abure said that the visit was an indication that Nigeria’s democracy was growing and that the political atmosphere is gradually crystallizing into a situation where politicians put the country first before partisan interest, adding that it was uncommon for a political party in power to remember others.
The Labour Party national chairman, however, added that for clarity, his party was in court to challenge the process of the election.
“I want to quickly put on record here, just for the records that we are in court in respect of the presidential election. You know that we are challenging the process leading to the outcome of the election.
“That is why I want to say it here clearly before it will be carried that Labour Party is supporting Asiwaju Tinubu, No! No! No! For us, it is a no-go area.” He added.
