VIETNAM elected Hanoi’s Communist Party Chief Vuong Dinh Hue as the new leader of its National Assembly on Wednesday morning.

He was voted in as part of a 12-day meeting that would see the country’s ruling Communist Party elect 25 key leadership roles, including a new president and prime minister.

The 64-year-old declared he would be absolutely loyal to the fatherland, to the people, and to the constitution of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, as he took an oath in front of the Vietnamese flag and party members.

Members of the National Assembly Vietnam’s parliament and principal legislative body dismissed former chairwoman and first female leader Nguyen Thi Ngan on Tuesday.

The electorate cast a secret ballot to confirm Hue as the leader early on Wednesday.

Hue was born in central Nghe, a province the same birthplace as Vietnam’s founding revolutionary Ho Chi Minh, and attained a doctorate in economics before working as a researcher in Slovakia in the late 1980s.

Hue’s political career spans numerous roles. He was a finance minister from 2011 to 2013, and also served as chief of the party’s economic commission from 2012 to 2016, deputy prime minister from April 2016.

In February 2020, Hue took up the influential role of secretary of Hanoi.

The new leadership positions for the president and prime minister would be announced on April 2, and April 5, respectively.
