WAUG: UNIPORT top swimming event with 58 medals

UNIVERSITY of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) Team on Thursday won 58 medals in swimming event to top the medals table at the ongoing West Africa Universities Games (WAUG) in Port Harcourt.
Team UNIPORT total medal haul at the final day of the swimming event was 31 gold, 17 silver and 10 bronze totalling 58 medals to top the swimming medal table.
Nile University of Niger came second with one gold, eight silver and three bronze medals totalling 12, while Legon University of Ghana won four silver and 13 bronze medals (17 medals) to place third.
Obafemi Awolowo University was in fourth position with 2 silver medals; University of Ilorin with one silver in fifth position, and University of Ibadan came last with two bronze medals.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the universities competed in 200 metres Individual Medley; 100m Backstroke; 200m Backstroke; 50m Butterfly and 4x200m Freestyle Relay.
In athletics, Enoch Adegoke, 18, of team Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, beat other title contenders to win gold with 10:21 seconds in the men’s 100 meters heat.
Adegoke became the fastest man at the 2018 WAUG having ran 10:21 seconds in the men’s 100m heat.
In the 100m women, Joy Udo-Gabriel, 19, representing University of Lagos UNILAG, defeated her opponents with time of 11.63 seconds to win gold.
Udo-Gabriel told NAN that she had already started preparation for the All African Games in Morocco and the 17th IAAF World Championship in Qatar both in 2019.
The gold medallist, who won bronze at the African Senior Athletics Championship in Asaba, Delta in August, said she was targeting to win gold in 2020 Tokyo Olympics in Japan.
Speaking, Funmi Otegbeye, Chief Coach Athletics in UNILAG, attributed Udo-Gabriel’s victory to perseverance, hard work and training.
