GODWIN Ogogo, the President, Track and Field Coaches of Nigeria, says quality athletes for international championships have been discovered at the ongoing West African University Games (WAUG) in Port Harcourt.

Ogogo told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the sidelines of WAUG at the University of Port Harcourt on Thursday that Nigerian athletes were doing well.

“These athletes are good enough for the African Games, the Commonwealth and Olympic Games.

“If we take them to camp early and for a longer time, they will be able to perform well in all the international championships,” he said.

Ogogo identified lack of sponsorship as one of the challenges facing Nigerian athletes.

“We lack sponsorship. There are no available funds to bring them together to improve their skills.

“The athletes do well when you take them to camp and expose them. It will also make the country to bounce back to win gold medals in the Olympics.

“If they don’t have this, they cannot compete with their counterparts outside. So, going outside to meet other people will help them a lot,” he said.

The coach urged the organised private sector to intervene and support the government in sponsoring athletes for maximum performance for the benefit of the country
