THE family of Ifeanyi Chiwetalu from Mgbagbu-Owa in Enugu State is sad over the inability of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency to brief them on who killed their son, who died in action while on duty as the team leader of his unit.

Ifeanyi Chiwetalu, an operative of the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), was allegedly murdered in cold blood recently by unknown suspects in military uniform while he was on official duty in Bida, Niger State.

Chiwetalu was allegedly attacked while on official duty, manning a checkpoint.

The deceased and his team members allegedly flagged down a vehicle for search, but the owner refused to be searched and he was not allowed to go by the NDLEA team led by Chiwetalu.

Realnews gathered from relations of the deceased that they were told that after a long while the owner of the vehicle accepted to be searched and after nothing incriminating was found on him or the vehicle, he was asked to go. But unknown to them, the man had phoned some hoodlums in army uniforms who rushed to the place and attacked Chiwetalu with knives and cudgel until they killed him.

The deceased Chiwetalu was said to have been stabbed severally with a long knife, which came out of his rear.

It was also alleged that he was hit with an iron rod on the back of his head, injuring his spinal cord before he subsequently died.

There is no information on whether other members of his team were also attacked. This prompted family members to think that he was killed in cold blood because of his dedication to duty and his penchant for not allowing his team members to indulge in acts of corruption while on duty.

But, what is certain is that as of press time, none of his team members reportedly sustained any injury and there was nothing to prove that they defended Chiwetalu while he was being attacked.

One of the distant cousins of the deceased, who spoke to Realnews, said that the family is surprised that the deceased was the only member of the team that was allegedly killed, prompting them to ask where were the other members of the team while he was attacked.

The violent way he was killed has raised questions about who killed Ifeanyi Chiwetalu. Was he the only victim in the attack? What is the identity of the man stopped for a search? What did his junior colleagues do when he was stabbed? Did the attackers go scot-free? Etc.

Realnews gathered that at present, the NDLEA is investigating the matter.

However, the deceased has been released to the family who has taken the corpse down to Enugu where it is being kept in the mortuary pending arrangements for burial after his aged mother, a widow, who has been kept in the dark about his death has been informed.

One of his cousins, who wishes anonymity, described the deceased as humble, hardworking,  respectful and incorruptible. Sadly, the cousin could not understand how the deceased was attacked and sustained injuries to his body, adding: “It remains a mystery how our son and brother died”.
