A Niger State High Court has ordered the arrest, remand in prison of Chief of Army Staff, General Faruk Yahaya, and Commandant TRADOC Minna over contempt.

On the orders of Justice Halima Abdulmalik, the High Court in Minna, the state of Niger, issued a warrant of arrest for the COAS, General Yahaya.

The charges against him include alleged contempt of court.

According to Abdulmalik, the Chief Judge of the state, the order was issued after the court heard a case that was brought before it in accordance with Order 42, Rule 10 of the Niger State High Court Civil Procedure 2018, which was recently updated.

Justice Abdulmalik issued the following declaration: “The order is commuting the Chief of Army Staff, General Faruk Yahaya, and the Commandant Training and Doctrine Command Minna, Major General Stevenson Olugbenga Olabanji, to be kept in Minna Correctional Custody for contentions of the order of this court on 12 October 2022.”

She gave the order that the two people under suspicion should remain in police custody until they apologized to the court for their contemptuous behaviour.

The presiding judge has postponed the continuation of the case until the 8th of December in 2022.
