NIGERIAN President Muhammadu Buhari has explained that he appointed Major-General Farouk Yahaya as the chief of army staff ahead of other superiors because of his experience in fighting Boko Haram in the North-east.

Buhari stated this today during an interview in Arise Television on Thursday, June 10.

Realnews reports that the appointment generated controversy because Buhari by passed more than 20 senior officers to appoint Yahaya, leading to speculations that therewill be mass retirement of his superiors who are also generals in the Nigerian Army but the Defence Headquarters denied it.

The president also said that the new chief of staff was appointed because he had the support and understanding of the troops.

Realnews reports that Yahaya who was the theatre commander of Operation Hadin Kai, the counter-insurgency operation in the North-east, replaced Lt. General Ibrahim Attahiru, who died in a plane crash with 10 other military personnel while on an official trip to Kaduna State in May
