THE establishment of Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer Offices (IPTTOs) by National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion (NOTAP), will increase awareness on intellectual property in the country.
Dr DanAzumi Ibrahim, Director-General of NOTAP said this in Abuja during an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday.
He also said that the creation of intellectual property offices, by the organisation in many institutions across had not only increased the awareness of the importance of intellectual property but also prompted patent culture in Nigeria.
He said the establishment of IPTTO, an initiative of NOTAP, was in collaboration with the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) to encourage the development of indigenous technologies.
“NOTAP in 2006, partnered with the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), to establish IPTTOs in some selected Nigerian institutions to help address the country’s peculiar problems, through innovation

”NOTAP has continued to deliver on that mandate till date,’’ he said.
Ibrahim also said that IPTTOs also refocused enabled researchers to focus their minds on researches that would beneficial the people.
He also said that there were lots of inventive and innovative activities going on in Nigerian institutions but noted that they were not properly directed toward demand and market-driven researches, hence the need for IPPTOs.
The NOTAP boss urged the institutions where IPTTO’s were present to maximise the opportunity offered to them, to ensure generation of patents for licensing and eventual earn revenue for the country.
He also called on researchers in the institutions to explore every necessary avenue, from the technical training rendered by NOTAP, to ensure that their research works were patented for onward licensing and commercialisation.
NOTAP boss said no country developed without being able to develop technologies to solve its peculiar problems, adding that development of science sector in Nigeria should not be left to foreign technologies alone. (NAN)
