ANTONY J. Blinken, U.S. Secretary of State has said that Russia attacked Ukraine because Ukraine dared to pursue a democratic path. This was made known in a press statement which he signed on February 28, 2022 for the 49th regular session of the UN Human Right Council.

In the statement, he described the attack on “Ukraine as Russia’s premeditated, unprovoked, and unjustified attack on Ukraine,” he said, noting that Russia’s invasion has damaged and destroyed schools, hospitals, radio stations and homes, killing and injuring civilians, including children.

The United States joins the UN Human Right Council to fulfill a pledge made by President Biden the country’s foreign policy.

Meanwhile, Antony J. Blinken, in a delegation which was to be headed by Sheba Crocker, U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations and Other International Organizations in Geneva was to deliver remarks to the assembled council and will use that opportunity to spell out the threat posed by Ukraine.

Recall that President Putin of Russia, on a TV address on February 24, as reported by BBC, complained of the insecurity that the country could face because of what he claimed to be a constant threat from modern Ukraine and as a result, airports and military headquarters were attacked, then tanks and troops were rolled in from Russia, Russian-annexed Crimea and its ally Belarus. As at the time of this report, warplanes have bombed major cities.

Although Russia has refused to use the terms war or invasion, however, some world leaders seem to be at the observing stage, while Ukraine earnestly seeks that its wish to join the EU be accepted as fast as possible.
