Widow in court for allegedly dumping 4-month-old baby

A 35-year-old widow, Habiba Abdullahi, who police accused of allegedly dumping her four-month-old baby in front of another person’s house on Wednesday appeared in an Upper Sharia Court Daura Road in Kaduna.

The police arraigned Abdullahi, who lives on New Bida Road Tudun Nupawa in Kaduna, with one count of abandonment of child.

The prosecutor, Insp  Shehu Abdullahi, told the court that one Sani Ahmed of Ahmed Abu Street by Poly Road Kaduna found and brought the baby to Metro Area Police Command, Kaduna, on Oct. 25.

He said Ahmed, at about 8 p.m, found the baby who was about four weeks old wrapped in a black polythene bag and abandoned in front of his house.

Abdullahi further stated that when investigation was conducted, it was discovered that the defendant gave birth to the baby girl and abandoned.

He said the accused confessed to the crime stating that she is a widow and could not take of the baby as she already has two other children to take care of.

The prosecutor told the court that the offence contravened the provisions of Section 206 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Laws, 2017.

After the charges were read to her, the accused pleaded not guilty.

The Judge, Abubakar Jumare, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Jumare ordered that the sureties must resident within the jurisdiction of the court and one of the surety must present a C of O to the court.

He adjourned the matter until Dec.18, 2018 for hearing. (NAN)
