SERENA Williams, world number one tennis player, is to face Angelique Kerber, a German, who thrashed Johanna Konta, Englishwoman, in the final of the 2016 Australian Open on Saturday, January 30.
Williams is seeking a 22nd Grand Slam title in her seventh final in Australia and her 26th Grand Slam final.
The 34-yer-old American made it to the final by dismissing the threat of Agnieska Radwanska 6-0 6-4 in about one hour, after she breezed through the first set in just 20 minutes.
Afterwards, Radwanska said in a court-side interview that she did not believe anyone at the moment could beat Williams. “She goes on court and she just wants to kill it. There was just no mistake…. Unbelievable serve. Everything, she was going for it. Yeah, I couldn’t do much; not at all, actually. I don’t think anyone can really play on that kind of level at all,” Radwanska said.
For Williams, who said she just excited to be in another final, the final match would be another opportunity to equal Steffi Graf’s record haul of Grand Slam titles.
“It just kind of blows my mind right now. I just feel like I’m playing the best I can and I can’t believe I’m in the final,” Williams said.
Kerber, her opponent in the final, dashed British hopes of sending a woman to the final in more than 60 years as she defeated Konta 7-5 6-2 grab a first ever grand slam final appearance.
Seeded seventh for the championship, analysts said Kerber would need to play above her best to stand any chance against Williams.
