YEMISI Olatunji, Nigeria’s number one-ranked female squash player, says her victory at the just-concluded Professional Squash Players Association of Nigeria (PSPAN) Open Tournament is a big deal.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Olatunji won the tournament for the fifth time in a row since its inception in 2016.

NAN reports also that Olatunji, who is of Lagos State, defeated Blessing Isaac of Kwara 3-0 in a game of best of five in the tournament’s final.

” I feel so elated, being able to be consistent even after over a year of COVID-19 imposed ban. I was able to retain the title for the fifth time.

“Its a great way to start the year for me, plus it’s my birth month. So, I intend to sustain this momentum and build on it.

“It’s important that as players we still train, because we just have to make do with whatever we can while staying safe,” the player said.

On how COVID-19 has affected players generally, Olatunji said the effect of the pandemic was not peculiar to squash alone.

“Its not just squash, we are all still struggling to get back to fitness. Our games are slow but I believe with more sponsors and regular tournaments, things will shape up.

” I also want to use this medium to appeal to the lovers of the game and corporate organisations to please come to our aid.

“The federation and state bodies can not do it all, there is a need for support from all quarters,” the number one player said.
