Women cooperative seeks support to deepen food sustainability

THE Nigeria Women Cooperative Federation Alliance Ltd. (NIWCOFA) has called for an urgent need to provide funds for women to enhance food security in the country.
The National President of the group, Mrs. Kyauta Yakubu, made the call at the inauguration of the cooperative state chapter on Wednesday in Abakaliki.
Yakubu, who was represented by Mrs Gertrude Ehiriudu, the National Secretary of NIWCOFA said that the support from governments and CBN would effectively improve food security in the country.
She further solicited for assistance from the Small, Medium Enterprise Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) and international donor agencies to eradicate hunger.
She said the group was the cooperative formed by women that understudied activities of women in their families, local government areas, and the nation at large.
She said that women needed to make a positive impact to ensure food security in the country.
“We, the national and state executives of NIWCOFA plead with the federal and state ministries of agriculture, CBN, other bank institutions to come to the aid of women in the provision of funds to enhance food security in the country.
“The country will be transformed through women’s cooperation. NIWCOFA believes in the values of self-help, democracy, social responsibility, equality,’’ Yakubu said.
The Chairman of the occasion, Mr Moses Nomeh said the group was crucial to economic growth through agriculture.
Nomeh, who is also the Commissioner for Agricultural and Natural Resources in the state, urged women to be properly guided and display transparency when the fund was provided to attract more support.
“We will partner with women to drive the economy of the state through agriculture and industrialization,” Nomeh said.
The South-East Zonal Coordinator of the group, Mrs Ngozi Obichukwu said that such cooperative groups would bring empowerment to women and profitable.
Obichukwu commended Gov. David Umahi for providing an enabling environment to attract the group in the state.
The CBN official from Abuja, Mr Patrick Kalu promised to partner the group to succeed.
The event with the theme: Cooperative as an economic tool for empowering Nigerian women, featured an exhibition of various end products by the women.
It also featured the inauguration of the state chapter of NIWCOFA by Mrs Yakubu. (NAN)
