BETTY Anyanwu-Akeredolu, the wife of Ondo State governor, in conjunction with the Ondo State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development and Forum for Wives of Ondo State Officials, FOWOSO, will on Friday, March 8, 2019 join the global community to celebrate 2019 International Women’s Day in appreciation of the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women, while also making a call to action for accelerating gender balance.

In a statement by Oluwatobi Fademi, the special assistant (Media) to the first lady, she described the programme as an annual event, stating that the theme for this year’s International Women’s Day Celebration is “#BalanceforBetter”, a call to action for driving gender balance across the world which includes but not limited to a gender-balanced boardroom, a gender-balanced government, a gender-balanced media coverage,  gender-balanced employees, more gender-balance in wealth, gender-balanced sports and many more; adding that gender balance is essential for economies and communities to thrive.

According to her, activities lined up for this year’s celebration are:

Wednesday, March 6, 2019: Public lecture with topic, “Inspiring Women for Greater Inclusion”.

Guest Lecturer: Helen Ogunsuyi of the Federal University of Technology, Akure.

Venue: Babafunke Ajasin Auditorium, Igbatoro road, Akure at 10a.m

Friday, March 8, 2019: Distribution of Maternity kits to Expectant Mothers across the 18 local government areas of Ondo State.

Fademi urged women across the State to join Anyanwu-Akeredolu in celebrating this year’s event in honour of women’s achievements, noting that with women making up more than 50% of the world’s population and often being the main link for the family and connection to the community, there remains a great deal of work to be done to ensure equal rights in all aspects of life.
