A World Bank-supported project has helped 28,799 vulnerable girls in Zambia remaining in school, the country’s education ministry said on Monday.

The Girls’ Education and Women’s Empowerment and Livelihood (GEWEL) funded by the World Bank has enabled the girls from vulnerable families in 29 districts to remain in school since its inception in 2016.

Ministry of General Education Spokesperson Nondo Chilongo said the girls who fail to progress in their education due to financial constraints were being supported through the project as part of the government’s empowerment program.

The project, she said, also involves funding boarding facilities for girls to make them safe, secure and provide a conducive environment for their learning.

She said in a statement that the selected districts were among districts with high poverty levels, adding that one of the qualifications for the girls was based on the extreme poverty situation in their households.

According to her, 10 more districts have been added to the project this year from the original 29 following an assessment survey conducted.

She added that a verification of the eligible girls to benefit from the project in the new districts was currently underway.

“We would like to appeal to eligible girls in the new additional districts to take advantage of the project for their secondary education while parents, guardians, and stakeholders in the education sector should ensure that girls are kept in school,” she said. (Xinhua/NAN)
