WORLD CANCER DAY: DEPOWA provides free cervical cancer screening for wives of military personnel

NO fewer than 200 women have benefited from the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association’s (DEPOWA’s) cervical cancer screening test and awareness lecture on breast cancer organized for wives of military personnel within the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
The cancer screening exercise which was organized by DEPOWA in collaboration with the Partnership for the Eradication of Cancer in Africa (PECA) to commemorate the year 2024 World Cancer Day. The cancer screening is also part of DEPOWA’s humanitarian interventions and medical outreach programmes within the barracks community.
In her remarks, the DEPOWA President, Oghogho Musa stated that the purpose of the cancer screening exercise is geared towards taking proactive steps to combat the killer disease, by sensitizing and conducting free cancer screening for wives of personnel. The DEPOWA President disclosed that since her assumption into office, the Association have conducted screened cervical screening for over 250 women, while over 80 women have been screened on breast cancer using the screening Mammograms kits free of charge.
Musa described the world cancer day as a global initiative to raise awareness about cancer, signs and symptoms as well as early detection, prevention and treatment while advocating for improved access to healthcare service for cancer patients.
Also at the event, the President PECA, Benjamin Ogbalor stated that his organization is elated to partner with DEPOWA, thus philosophy of PECA is focused on the eradication of cancer from the surface of the world. According to him, PECA view is to work hard to ensure that as challenging as cancer look if all hands are put together in research and improve practices cancer can be eradicated. An awareness lecture on cancer was delivered during the event.
