Ahead of the forthcoming World Amputee Cup, the Nigeria Amputee Football Federation (NAFF) has solicited support from individuals, cooperate organisations in the country and the Diaspora to empower the national team for the Mundial.
The Vice-President of NAFF, Princess Carol Ngozi, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday that the amputee world cup-bound team known as Special Eagles was in camp in Lagos.
Ngozi said that the national amputee team otherwise called “Special Eagles” would have their first outing in the World Amputee Football Federation (WAFF) organised Mundial in Mexico from Oct. 25 to Nov. 5.
“The World Cup will be starting in less than two weeks from now and we are appealing to fans, the public and cooperate organisations to support the national team.
“They are in camp already training hard and warming up to do the Nigeria proud, that is the reason we are asking for all forms assistance to finance the trip,’’ she said.
She applauded some individuals and stakeholders that had responded to its numerous appeals and identified with the Special Eagles with financial support, adding that it was still expecting more response.
The NAFF vice-president said that necessary preparations for the trip were in progress, while the footballers were fine tuning their wings under the supervision Coach Victor Nwenwe.
“Response have been encouraging and we remain grateful to supporters, at least the footballers are now in camp and things are moving fine but we need more financial assistance.
“Fred Edoreh, the immediate past chairman of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN). Lagos chapter, is doing a great job, we appreciate his numerous efforts in this project,’’ she added.
She noted that the Special Eagles had qualified for the Mundial three times and failed to appear due to lack of support, adding that the 2018 edition should not be missed.
According to her, the Special Eagles are expected to depart the country early to enable them acclimatise to the weather ahead of the first match with Brazil on October 28. (NAN)
