THE Youth Wing of Federation of Muslim Women Association of Nigeria (FOMWAN), Bauchi State chapter, on Monday, sensitised 50 girls on menstrual hygiene.

The association sensitised the girls at the FOMWAN Secondary School, Bauchi, to celebrate the 2021 World Hijab Day, marked annually on Feb. 1 in 140 countries worldwide.

A hijab is a veil worn by most Muslim women in the presence of any male outside of their immediate family, which usually covers the head and chest, and sometimes the face.

The term can refer to any head, face, or body covering worn by Muslim women that conforms to Islamic standards of modesty.

The essence of the hijab day is to encourage women of all religions and ethnicities to wear and experience hijab, described as an opportunity for non-Muslim women to experience body covering.

The FOMWAN Youth Lead in Bauchi, Hajiya Fatima Abubakar, said menstruation had been a threat to many girls due to inadequate information.

She encouraged the girls to be decent and showcase good behaviours, manners and decent dressing at all times.

Abubakar said that using hijab literary meant covering the female body, which portrayed being modest.

She added that “World Hijab Day is an annual celebration  held on Feb. 1.

“Hijab depicts modesty and earns respect and protects girls from vices.”

A member of the youth wing, Hajiya Saratu Ahmed, who dwelt more on personal hygiene and well-being of adolescents, said “we are focusing on menstrual hygiene as it affects girls’ education because of inadequate knowledge on menstruation.

“I urge you to always take along with you, an extra sanitary pad during your menstrual period.”

Hajiya Lubabtu Idris, who spoke on behalf of the school management, applauded FOMWAN for the sensitisation.

She urged the youth wing to come up with more programmes for adolescents to enable them to make informed choices.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the association distributed sanitary towel/pad and other hygiene products to the girls.
