PATRICK Ezie, the President, Rotary Club of Abuja Federal, District 9125, has urged aid workers to render more selfless service to vulnerable persons in the country.

Ezie who made this call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Abuja, in commemoration of the 2020 World Humanitarian Day (WHD) with the theme ‘Real Life Heroes.’’

The world humanitarian day is marked annually on Aug. 19 to celebrate people who have committed their lives to help others.

Ezie urged aid workers and the society at large to help others even as the world battles the COVID-19  pandemic.

He encouraged humanitarians all over the world not be deterred from rendering good services, even when they do not get accolades from people.

“To be a humanitarian is more than just a profession, it is self-sacrificing, it requires giving your time, talent and treasure towards the needs of others.

“I urge you to focus on the joy that comes with helping others, which cannot be satisfied with money or gold or other gratifications.

“Though the COVID-19 pandemic has come to stay and it is a great challenge to humanitarian work all over the world because it comes with great disadvantage to continue to offer the services that we would love to offer to those communities in need.’’

Ezie said aid workers are more exposed to danger due to the nature of their services.

“Humanitarians are in a difficult situation because they can see the suffering in the communities, which they would love to go out and help but are on the other hand, constrained by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“They are also concerned about their own physical health but I would advise them to be more innovative and look for other avenues, explore other alternatives to achieve the same goal.

“For instance, humanitarians can consider rendering antenatal classes via online or having it through televised instructions on how mothers can protect themselves and their babies.

“They can also provide protective equipment to women and healthcare workers, train community women on how to make face masks and other PPEs for themselves and the public. (NAN)
