World Teachers Day: Borno NUT calls for recruitment of more teachers

THE Borno wing of Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has called for the recruitment of more qualified teachers for public primary schools in the state.

The state’s NUT Chairman, Malam Jibrin Mohammed, made the  call on Wednesday in Maiduguri in
an interview with newsmen to mark this year’s World Teachers Day.

Mohammed said that the state government did well in the area of infrastructure, as many new schools
were constructed and destroyed ones were rehabilitated, while the minimum wage has been implemented.

He, however, added that “there is need to cap the developments with more qualified teachers, particularly
now that there is mass enrollment of pupils launched by the state government.”

The NUT chairman, who recalled the challenges faced by teachers in Borno during the insurgency which he said
affected 500 teachers, adding, however, that “things have improved in area of security.”

A Teacher in the state, Malam Yusuf Tom, who observed that there are some teachers that are yet to get the
minimum wage due to some hitches, called for government attention to address the problem.

Tom also urged government to assist teachers with other welfare packages like  soft loans and accommodation.

Another teacher, Sulaiman Maina, who also spoke on the plight of some teachers yet to get the minimum wage,
urged government to expedite action on over 1000 of such  affected teachers verified.

Maina lauded government for embarking on mass training of teachers with NCE for degree programmes
in Borno State University.

Also known as International Teachers’ Day, World Teachers Day is celebrated on Oct. 5 every year since 1994 to
celebrate, thank and honour teachers for their contributions to their students.

The Day has “The Transformation of Education Begins With Teachers” as its theme for 2022. (NAN)
