THE Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA) has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for sending a special envoy to South Africa because of renewed Xenophobic attacks in that country.

“We believe the president’s decision is a step in the right direction and will send a strong message to the South African government,’’ NUSA President, Adetola Olubajo said in a statement on Wednesday in Lagos.

“NUSA commends President Buhari for this action and we pledge full cooperation with the envoy and his team.

“NUSA also thanks our Foreign Affairs Minister, Mr Geoffrey Onyeama for summoning the South African High Commissioner in Nigeria to protest the unfortunate incident in that country.’’

Olubajo urged President Buhari’s special envoy to make it clear to South African government that this should be the last attacks against Nigerians.

“Nothing happened after similar attacks in the past and Nigerians hit by such attacks are left to rue their losses.

“NUSA implores the special envoy to meet with Nigerians in South Africa and interact with them.

“The victims of Xenophobic attacks should be assisted to restart their businesses, the statement e-mailed to the News Agency of Nigeria said.

Olubajo noted that such businesses were started with hard earned savings which took years to build and were looted and burned in a few minutes.

He said that as a law abiding organisation, NUSA had always urged Nigerians in South Africa to obey the laws of their host country.
