YOBE government says it has scored 87 per cent in the 2021 Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS)/ Nigeria Immunization Coverage Survey (NICS) on key maternal, neonatal and child healthcare indicators

The Commissioner for Health, Dr Lawan Gana told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Damaturu, that the performance was an improvement on the state’s previous 49 per cent.

According to him, the MICS/NICS is an international household survey aimed at providing relevant data to countries for sustainable development of women and children in particular.

He said the survey indicated general improvement in health, nutrition, sanitation and hygiene, access to vaccination, among others.

Gana attributed the successes to viable interventions by the state government and its development partners.

The commissioner listed the interventions to include construction and rehabilitation of 138 primary healthcare centres, establishment of eight general hospitals and four specialists’ hospital across the state.

Others, he said, were the completion of the maternal, neonatal and child health complex in Damaturu and the recruitment of hundreds of health workers by the Mai Mala Buni-led administration.

Gana said the state had also introduced Contributory Healthcare scheme and established Drugs and Medical Consumables Management Agency to support the scheme.

The Commissioner said plans for digitisation of the health sector and the gradual production of drugs, regents and essential consumables by the state had reached advance stage.

He said efforts were on to secure accreditation for the Yobe State University, Damaturu, to run post graduate residency training in family medicine, radiology, obstetrics and gynaecology, among others. (NAN)
