THE Lagos State Government says it will partner Caritas Nigeria on vocational skills training and empowerment of youths in the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Caritas Nigeria, instituted at the instance of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), carries out humanitarian works for the church.

The empowerment project is supported by  the Conrad Hilton Foundation, U.S.

The state’s Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mr Mobolaji Ogunlende, signified the state’s interest at the flag-off of the Caritas Nigeria’s presentation of vocational skills start-up kits to 720 beneficiaries in Badagry, Lagos state.

The programme, known as “Building Sustainable Livelihoods in Vibrant Community (B-SLiC) Project”, trained participants in 14 different skills.

The project mobilised participants according to skill of interest and persons are assigned to a master trainer located in the community, to be trained.

They project also equipped them with kits needed to start up the business they acquired skills on, to make them self-reliant.

The project trained participants on soap making, electrical works repairing, phone repairing, carpentry, catering, dress making, bead making and others.

The presentation programme, an outcome of a three-month training of the participants, featured an exhibition of trade artistry and a traditional dance in appreciation of the humanitarian gesture.

Speaking at the event, Ogunlende, who was a Special Guest, lauded the impact of the project on the lives of the beneficiaries and the state, saying that the state would partner the Caritas to reach the grassroot.

The commissioner, represented by Mrs Vera Orosanye, a Deputy Director in the ministry, charged the beneficiaries to leverage the platform and improve their social status.

According to the commissioner,  the state and Caritas will work together subsequently to impact more areas of and in the state.
