THE Abia State Government has expressed its readiness to partner the National Agency For Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in its campaign against fake drugs and substandard products.

Gov. Alex Otti made this known on Tuesday, when the Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, paid him a courtesy visit at the Government House, Umuahia.

Otti said that the government would stop at nothing toward ensuring that the fight against the sales and manufacturing of fake drugs and substandard products succeeded in Abia.

He said that the government would not relent in encouraging Abia people to maximise and channel their potential to positive ventures.

The governor commended the NAFDAC boss for being passionate about her job, thus saving the lives of many Nigerians.

He also thanked her for endorsing his government.

Earlier, Adeyeye said that the agency had the mandate to regulate and control the manufacturing of drugs, foods and other chemicals, to prevent deaths of any Nigerian as a result of unwholesome products.

“NAFDACs mandate is to regulate and control the manufacture, importation; exportation; advertisement; sale and use of several regulated products; drugs; food; chemical devices; cosmetics and packaged water.

”This function will play a vital role in enabling the agency to ease the pain of our people, so that we can prevent death of so many that take falsified, substandard medicine and all unwholesome food,” she said.

Adeyeye also emphasised the need to harness the micro, small and medium enterprise industry in Abia.

According to her, there is the need for Coordinated Wholesale Centres, where drugs and other related products could be monitored as Nigerians deserve the best.

“So, we are praying and hoping, sir, that in your time, we will have a coordinated wholesale centre where our people, our marketers can be monitored,” Adeyeye said.

She further said that the establishment of such a centre would provide a viable machinery that would boost the campaign against fake drugs and substandard products in the state. (NAN)
