THE Association of General and Private Medical Practitioners of Nigeria has urged the three tiers of government to address the disconnect between the medical practitioners in both public and private health sectors.
Dr Tunji Akintade, Chairman, Lagos State chapter of the association, made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Lagos.
Akintade said that governments should work more with leadership of health associations in each state and develop a process that would be continuum, irrespective of the administration in power.
He added that there should be a continuous engagement and review of system developed with indicator to measure the progress.
“The private health sector that gives 65 to 70 per cent care to the public is not budgeted for.
“We are not saying the government should give them money, but there must be a collaboration between them, which will encourage the private health sector to be in practice rather than go into extinction.
“The assumption that there is communication between the Commissioners of Health and private health workers is not correct. There is a large gap between the private sector and the public sector,” he said.
Akintade said the country requires an effective healthcare system, adding that the primary, secondary and tertiary care levels were working in isolation.
“It is painful that our General Hospitals and teaching hospitals have all their beds filled up with the patients that ought to be in primary healthcare.
“And, that is the reason why, when we take serious cases to them, they will say there are no beds,” he said.
Akintade stressed that resolving the issue would have address about 70 per cent of the challenges confronting the health nation’s sector. (NAN)
