THE Akwa Ibom Police Command says it has arrested 137 suspects for various offences ranging from armed robbery, kidnapping, rape, cultism and child theft in the last three months in the state.

The State Commissioner for Police, CP Zaki Ahmed, gave the figure while parading the suspects in Uyo on Wednesday.

He said that the suspect would be charged to court at the end of the investigation.

Ahmed explained that the arrests were made possible as a result of the cooperation of the people of the state.

He said that new security measures had been put in place by the command to fish out criminals in the state.

The governor commended the state government, sister security agencies and the media for supports to eradicate crime in the state.

He disclosed that 13 out of the 137 suspects were arrested for stealing eight transformers belonging to the state government, adding that the transformers had been recovered from the suspects.

“On assumption of duty, I promised the good people of Akwa Ibom that I will interface with them on regular basis as we partner in fighting crime to a standstill in the state.

“Within the last few months, I have reappraised the security architecture of the Command in order to effectively police the state and bring crime and criminalities to the barest minimum.

“I am happy about the progress made so far at the plaza, where a total of thirteen suspects were arrested in connection with armed robbery, phone snatching, one-chance and assault on innocent citizens.

He noted that normalcy had returned to the University of Uyo and tight security put in place and other parts of the state.

“I am aware that much more is desired of us, hence, I am calling on the good people of Akwa Ibom to be more vigilant and utilise our hotlines in reporting crimes promptly.

“We have further increased our response capacity and are now closer to the people,” Ahmed said. (NAN)
