GOV. Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State has urged athletes representing the state in competitions to embrace the spirit of sportsmanship.
He made the plea in Ibadan on Thursday while receiving the Torch of Unity for the 19th National Sports Festival scheduled to hold in Abuja between Dec. 6 and Dec. 16.
The News Agency of Nigeria, (NAN) reports that the governor was represented by his deputy, Chief Moses Adeyemo, at the government secretariat.
Ajimobi also urged athletes representing the state to be good ambassadors by winning medals and setting records at the festival.
He further urged them to adhere strictly to the rules of the game, saying the state would continue to provide an enabling environment for young and upcoming athletes to excel.
Mr Abayomi Oke, the State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, said the government would give the contingent moral support to excel during the festival.
Government, he said, would reward outstanding athletes and nurture them to represent the nation in competitions.
Mr Olufemi Ajao, the Zonal Coordinator, Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports, said that the movement of the Torch of Unity across the south west states was a symbol that all arrangements had been concluded.
NAN reports that the event was witnessed by Mr Olalekan Alli, the Secretary to the State Government, Mrs Hannah Ogunesan, Head of Service, and Mr Niyi Alebiosu, the State Chairman of Sport Writers’ Association of Nigeria.
