GOVERNOR Willie Obiano of Anambra has announced plans to partner prospective investors to boost production of spices for local consumption and export.
The governor unveiled the plan, after an inspection tour of Tiger Foods Production Company at Obosi, Idemili North LG Area of the state.
Obiano was represented at the event by Nkem Okeke, his deputy.
The governor said that the state would explore better ways of engaging farmers in the state in growing the raw materials needed for the production of the spices.
The spices include Chili pepper, Tumeric, Local Basil and exotic Vegetables.
“From what I have seen on ground, the company is committed to its services. We’ll continue to see how to engage farmers in the state more in growing the raw materials needed for the production, which will be of immense benefit to the state,” he said.
Earlier, Afam Mbanefo, commissioner for Agriculture, Mechanisation, Processing and Export, explained that the government hoped to commence growing of the spices at an already acquired100 hectares of land at Ndikelionwu and Ugbenu communities.
Mbanefo said that Tiger Foods has interest in Chili pepper, Tumeric, Local Basil and exotic Vegetables, stressing that partnering the firm would be of economic, social and political benefits.
Don Ebubeogu, managing director of Tiger Foods, noted that it would be cumbersome for his company alone to undertake the entire chain of cultivation, processing and export.
He appealed to the government to assist in identifying communities, where such commodities could be grown very well, so as to boost the economy of the state.
