THE Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON) has described the establishment of its Lagos State Council as a remarkable achievement.

This is contained in a statement signed by the union’s Chairman, Media and Publicity, Mr Jossy Olawale, on Friday following the inauguration of the council on Aug. 31.

The union said that the state council was established to deepen the awareness, advocacy, and consciousness of members’ participation in its activities.

According to the union, it will ensure delivery of adequate welfare and favourable conditions of work to app-based transport workers in Nigeria.

“This is a big shot for our union, and we must all be proud of it; the Lagos state council will be the model for other states of AUATON to be established.

“We will explore the option of the electoral committee in all states, and determine at the level of the national administrative council on the formula for every state we will inaugurate, “ he said.

The union said that members had continued to experience unfair treatment and exploitation by the app-based companies.

It said that drivers continued to experience double taxation at the local, state and the national government and app companies were persistent in their actions of unfair dismissal.

It said also, that drivers lacked access to social insurance benefits because the e-hailing sector was not regulated.

“Therefore, we will build solidarity through our structures across the country, improve the working conditions for workers in the sector, and protect their human and civil rights.

“We will work closely with the government to enforce and monitor regulatory frameworks that will ensure the responsibility of app companies, “ it said. (NAN)
