THE African Petroleum Producers’ Organisation, APPO, has commended the Presidency of COP28, the United Arab Emirates, for the great efforts it is making to ensure that COP28 provides a truly inclusive platform for all global energy stakeholders to chart a practical way forward for a successful energy transition

APPO noted and expressed satisfaction with the efforts of the Sultan Ahmad Al-Jaber Committee for the organisation of COP28 in reaching out to various players in the global energy and environment industry to make inputs in the preparations towards COP28. The 18 member country pan-African energy organisation welcomed a team from the Secretariat of COP28 to the meeting of the Forum of APPO NOCs held in Algiers where discussions centered on how to accelerate decarbonisation and the adoption of clean energy technologies.
APPO also welcomed COP28 organisers’ interactions with other global energy bodies like the World Energy Council, whose track record of shaping global energy policies in the last 100 years, has been unparalleled, attributing the inclusive drive to the commitment of the leadership of the UAE to energy transition and to the COP28 Committee led by Sultan Ahmad Al-Jaber, who played a key role in shaping the UAE’s clean energy path. An energy diplomat, he has participated in 11 meetings of the COPs, has a 20-year career across both renewable and traditional energy. He was the founding CEO for over a decade and the current chairman of Masdar, a prominent renewable energy company.
In 2016, Al Jaber assumed the leadership of ADNOC, with a clear mandate: to transform and decarbonise the operations of ADNOC. An early mover in hydrogen, it is decarbonising its operations using nuclear and solar power, is leading the deployment of CCUS, and is growing its investment in renewable energies.
