Amechi Akorah, the managing director, Anambra State Waste Management Authority, ASWAMA, has urged the people of Anambra to desist from disposing wastes in drainage channels.
The wastes clog drainage channels, thereby restricting free flow of rain water.
Akorah, while speaking with newsmen in Awka, noted that blocking of drainage channels obstruct free-flow of rain water, sayings that it could lead to disasters.
“I want us to take care of drainage channels around our residences and ensure they are not blocked.
“It is regrettable that some people dump refuse in drainages, thereby blocking channels that government spent huge amounts to build.
“We should take the cognisance of the fact that the rainy season is here again and there is urgent need for drainage channels to be free in order to avoid flood disaster.’’
He added: “bag your wastes and dispose them in ASWAMA waste bins located in various places for onward evacuation by the agency.
“I want us to note that maintenance of clean environment is a collective responsibility and we must know that the environment we neglect today will take revenge on us tomorrow.’’
Akorah stressed the need for cutting of grasses around homes, saying that bushes around the homes do not promote healthy living.
He enjoined Anambra people to desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse in order to achieve sustainable clean environment.
