Mr Samuel Nwakohu, Registrar of Council for the Regulation of Freight Forwarding in Nigeria (CRFFN), has said that automation of all clearing processes will end document falsification in cargo clearing.
The registrar spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Lagos on policies being introduced by the council to streamline operations in Nigerian ports.
Nwakohu said that automation being put in place by the council would eliminate constant loss of government revenue through leakages such as document forgery.
He regretted that some port users were still thinking of ways to defraud the government is spite of efforts being made by the government to make transactions in the port easier.
“We are in the process of making all operatives and clearing associations to key into process automation to check malpractice through paper forgery and insincere declarations.
“As regulators, we have to come up with innovations that will restore the confidence of investors, government and practitioners in the system, because if the system goes wrong, everyone will be affected.
“Our freight forwarders will be made to know the negative impact document falsification has on the economy,’’ he said.
According to him, delays in cargo clearing are mostly traced to wrong documentation and sharp practices by freight forwarders.
He hoped that the automation would usher in a win-win situation as cargo clearing at ports would be quick while the government would get more revenue.
According to him, the policy, to be introduced before the end of the second quarter of 2019, would revolutionalise cargo clearing in Nigeria. (NAN)
