PLAN International, (an NGO), says it will support the Bauchi State Government to strengthen mental health units in 30 primary healthcare centers (PHCs) across 10 local government councils.

Mr Mohammed Nasiru, the Senior Project Coordinator of the NGO, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Bauchi on Wednesday.

Nasiru said that mental health was important in the various stages of human growth, from childhood, to adolescence through to adulthood.

He said that the exercise would be conducted under a five-year ASPIRE Project in Bauchi State with funding from Global Affairs Canada.

“The ASPIRE project will strengthen mental health units to intervene in mild and moderate mental health issues.

“People have stress and they don’t know that mental health has different categories, signs and symptoms.

“Mental health includes: our emotional, psychological, and social well-being.

“In the absence of such units in health facilities, individuals tend to establish private centres,” he said.

He said that the NGO would support the state to upgrade in building the capacity of its professionals to provide services.

Nasiru said that: Bauchi, Gamawa, Dass, Kirfi, Jama’are, Darazo, Ningi, Misau,Toro and Katagum Local Government Council Areas would benefit from the project. (NAN)
