Enyinnaya Harcourt Abaribe, politician and senator representing Abia-South Senatorial District, 60, March 3. Born in Abia State, he studied at Government College Umuahia, Abia State, 1974, University of Benin, 1979, and obtained his master’s degree from the same university in 1982. Lecturer, University of Benin, 1982-1985; SCOA Nigeria’s area manager for Southern Nigeria, 1985-1991; senior manager for investment, NICON, 1991-1992, and CEO of Integrated Mortgage Co, 1993-1995. Abaribe became Abia State’s deputy governor, 1999-2003; he contested governorship race in the state in 2003 under the platform of the default All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP; he became a senator in 2007 under was  People’s Democratic Party, PDP, and was re-elected in 2011.

Edochie

Pete Edochie, actor, broadcaster and administrator, 68, March 7. Born in Enugu, Enugu State, he had his primary and secondary school education in northern Nigeria. He was a deputy managing director, Eastern Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation, 1967-1988. Prior to that, he played the lead role of Okonkwo in an NTA adaptation of Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart and won an International Award. After retiring from broadcasting he went fully into acting and is considered one of Africa’s most talented actors, by both Movie Awards and Movie Magic’s Africa Magic Cable network. Edochie has featured in over 200 movies, some of which are Throne of the Gods, My Beloved Son, Secret Pain, Passage of Kings, Return of the Princess, and Egg of Life.

Victor Uwaifo, musician, sculptor and lecturer, 74, March 1. Born in Benin City, Edo State, he was educated at Holy Cross Cathedral School, Benin City, 1948-1952; Benin Baptist School, 1953-1955; Western Boys Baptist High School, 1957-1959; St. Gregory’s College, Lagos, 1960-1961; Yaba College of Technology, Lagos, 1961-1966, and University of Benin, Edo State, 1993-1997. He was appointed graphic artist, Nigeria Television Service, now Nigeria Television Authority, Lagos, 1964-1966. He served as commissioner for culture and tourism in Edo State, 2001-2003, and lectured in the Department of Fine and Applied Arts, Univeristy of Benin.

Betty Bakare, former chairman, Osun State, Christian Pilgrims Welfare Board, 75, March 3. Born in Okuku, Osun State, she studied at Women Training Centre, Abeokuta, 1962-1963; Middlesex College, Chelmsford Essex, 1966-1968, and Oxford University, London, 1979. She was head of administration and finance, Icon Limited, Lagos, 1978-1980, and voluntarily retired from the organisation in 1991. Bakare is a member of Nigeria Institute of Banking, NIB.
