Mike Adenuga Jnr, businessman and industrialist, 60, April 29. Born in Ijebu-Igbo, Ogun State, he was educated at Ibadan Grammar School, Ibadan; North Western State University, Oklahoma, US, and Peace University, New York, majoring in business administration with emphasis on marketing. He is the chairman/chief executive of Globacom; director, Consolidated Oil. He was a former director, Newswatch Communications Limited and president, Nigeria Association of Oil Explorationists. Adenuga holds an honorary doctorate awarded by Ogun State University, Ago-Iwoye, in 1992. He was awarded the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger, GCON, by President Goodluck Jonathan in 2012.
Remi Olowude, vice-chairman and chief executive officer, Industrial and General Insurance, IGI, 62, April 26. Born in Inisha, Ejigbo, Osun State, he was educated at the University of Lagos, 1970-1973, and the University of Santa Clara, California, US, 1976. Olowude, who has more than 28 years’ cognate experience in insurance management, is also an associate member of the Chartered Insurance Institute of London.
Adesoji Adeniyi Ajayi-Bembe 11, the Obanikoro of Lagos, 63, April 28. Born in Lagos, he attended Holy Trinity Primary School, Lagos, and Saint Finbarrs’ College, Akoka, Lagos. His working career started with the Nigeria Railway Corporation, NRC. He later worked with NICON Insurance and Plisson Fisco Nigeria Limited. He joined the defunct Unity Party of Nigeria, UPN, during the Second Republic and served as the organising secretary, Lagos Island. He was also secretary, Alliance for Democracy, AD. At various times, he was chairman, Traffic Authority; chairman, and Central Business Authority. He became the Obanikoro of Lagos on September 14, 2001, thus becoming one of the kingmakers who appoint the Oba of Lagos.
Chukwuemeka Ike, novelist and professor of Literature, 82, April 28. Born in Ndikeliown, Anambra State, he studied at Government College, Umuahia; University of Ibadan and Stanford University, US. Ike was registrar, West Africa Examinations Council, WAEC, 1971-1979. He has won many awards and published many books. Ike also served as director, Daily Times of Nigeria, DTN, PLC; 1971-1987. He was the pro-chancellor/chairman of governing council, University of Benin, 1990-1991; and pioneer pro-chancellor and chairman of Anambra State University, 2001-2005.
Kofoworola Akerele-Bucknor, lawyer, politician and former deputy governor of Lagos State, 74, April 30. Born in Lagos State, she studied at the CMS Girls’ School, Lagos; Gray’s Inn High School, Holborn, London. She started her career as presenter/interviewer, African Service, 1962-1963; editor, Helliograture Lansen, Switzerland. Akerele-Bucknor later became announcer, Voice of Nigeria, VON, English Service; promoted senior producer, Talks, VON; client service manager, Graham and Gillies Advertising Limited. She was elected into the Senate in 1991, and later became deputy governor to Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Lagos State in 1999.
Anthony Suleiman Momoh, lawyer, journalist and administrator, 74, April 27. Born in Auchi, Edo State, he was educated at Government School, Okpe, Edo State, 1949-1954; Anglican School, Okpe, Edo State, 1954; Provincial Teacher’s Training College, Abudu, Edo State, 1956-1957; Government Teacher’s College, Abraka, Delta State, 1960-1961; University of Nigeria, Nsukka, 1964-1966; University of Lagos, 1966-1967; Nigerian Law School, Lagos, 1974-1975. Momoh started his career as a teacher with the Anglican Secondary School, Auchi, 1955-1962; editor, Spear magazine, 1967-1971; training manager, Times Journalism Institute, 1971-1976; editor, Daily Times, 1976-1980; general manager, planning and development, Daily Times PLC, 1982-1984; senior manager, Times Publications Division, 1984-1986; minister of information and culture, 1986-1990. Momoh was president of Nigeria Guild of Editors, NGE, 1976-1978; member, Nigeria Bar Association, NBA; fellow, Commonwealth Journalists Association, CJA. He was appointed national chairman of the Congress for Progressive Change, CPC in 2011.
