Muhammadu Buhari, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, retired major general and former head of state, 73, December 17. Born in Daura, Kastina State, he was educated in Nigeria, the United Kingdom and India. He was general officer commanding, GOC, 3rd Armoured Division, Jos, 1981-1983. Buhari was the head of state and commander-in-chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces from 1983-1985, before he was overthrown by Ibrahim Babangida. He was chairman, Petroleum Trust Fund, PTF. Buhari was the presidential candidate of the defunct All Nigerian People’s Party, ANPP, in the 2003 and 2007 presidential elections. He dumped ANPP and formed the defunct Congress for Progressives Change, CPC, on whose platform he contested the 2011 presidential election. Buhari is a founding member of the new All Progressives Congress, APC. He was elected president of the country in the 2015 general elections.
