Aliko Dangote, businessman, industrialist, 56, April 10. Born in Kano State, he was educated at the Kano Capital School, Kano; Birnin Kudu, Jigawa State; Alzabal University, Cairo, Egypt. He was appointed business associate, Alhassan Dantata and sons, 1970-1977. He has been managing director/chief executive, Dangote Group of Companies since 1977. He is also the managing director, Blue-Star Shipping Company; Blue-Star Investment, United Kingdom; Blue-Star Services Company Limited and Greenview International Company, Ghana. He is a member, Nigerian-British Chamber of Commerce and the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, MAN. He was honoured with the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger, GCON, by President Goodluck Jonathan in 2010.

He was appointed Economist, National Economic Development Office, NECO, UK, 1968-1969; chairman/chief executive officer, African Development Consulting Group Limited, 1972; senior consultant and representative in Nigeria, Business International, Geneva, 1972-1978; chairman/chief executive officer, Diamond Bank, 1991, and retired as chairman of the bank in 2009. Dozie was amember of audit panel, Nigeria Airways, 1985; director, United Bank for Africa; chairman, Nigerian Economic Summit Group. Dozie is also the chairman of MTN Nigeria.

Fatimah Abubakar, justice and wife of Abdulsalami Abubakar, former head of state, 62, April 12. Born in Minna, Niger State, she was educated at the Federal Government College, Sokoto, Sokoto State, 1970-1971; University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo Univeristy, 1972-1974; Nigeria Law School, Lagos, 1975-1976. She started her legal career as inspector of area courts, Niger State Ministry of Justice in 1977. She later became principal state counsel, Niger State Ministry of Justice in 1977; solicitor-general and permanent secretary of the ministry. She was also attorney-general and commissioner for justice, Niger State; member, Constitutional Review Committee; member, National Committee on Fraud and Malpractices in Banks and other Financial Institutions; president, Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association, Woman’s Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative.

Tom Ikimi, architect, politician and administrator, 69, April 10. Born in Kumba, West Cameroon, he was educated at St Joseph’s College, Buea, 1957-1961; Midwest Polytechnic, now Auchi Polytechnic; Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, 1973. Ikimi started his civil service career with the former Midwest Ministry of Works; was chairman, Tomline Engineering Company Limited, Benin, Edo State; nominated member, Constituent Assembly, 1988-1989; chairman, National Republican Convention, NRC, 1989-1993; minister of foreign affairs, 1994-1998; Ikimi, who is one of the leaders of Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, holds the traditional titles of Inneh of Igueben; Akinrogun of Ife, and a member of Ikoyi Club among others.

Sylvester Onoja, educationist, administrator and former principal, King’s College, Lagos, 67, April 10. Born in Imane, Kogi State, he was educated at Native Authority Senior Primary School, Ofugo, Kogi State; Our Lady of Schools’ Teachers College, Anyigba; Advanced Teachers’ College, Zaria; University of Dakar, Senegal; Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. Onoja was employed as lecturer, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, 1975-1977; principal, St Peter’s College, Idah, 1977-1982; commissioner, Benue State Teaching Service Commission, 1982-1984; vice-principal, Federal School of Arts and Science, Suleja, Niger State; deputy director, National Educational Technology Centre, Kaduna; member, Board of Directors, Benue Printing and Publishing Corporation, Makurdi; acting director, National Educational Technology Centre, Kaduna, 1987. Onoja, who was commissioner for education in 2007 in Kogi State, was appointed by the federal government to head the committee assigned to upgrade facilities in unity schools in Nigeria.

Okoli Emmanuel Osita, estate surveyor, businessman, community leader, managing partner, Osita Okoli and Company, 46, April 15. Born in Onitsha, Anambra State, he was educated at Central School, Onitsha, 1973-1978; Federal Government College, Enugu, 1978-1983; University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus, 1983-1987. He started his career as estate surveyor at Knight Frank and Rutley, Nigeria, 1988-1991; was estate surveyor and valuer, Fox and Company/Adegbemile, Agangan, Akinlosotu and Company, 1991-1993. He is a fellow, Nigerian Institute of Estate Surveyors and Valuers. He is a member, International Facility Management Association, member, International Real Estate Federation, France; associate member, International Real Estate Institute, Minnesota, USA; probationer, Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, UK. He was vice-president, NIESV. He is president, International Real Estate Federation, African region.

Awarded

Desmond Tutu, primate of the Anglican Church of Southern Africa, has won the $1.6million Templeton Prize for affirming life’s spiritual dimension. The organisers said he was awarded the 2013 prize for his lifelong work in advancing spiritual principles such as love and forgiveness that have helped to liberate people around the world. He will receive the award at Guildhall in London on May 21. He was also the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984. Tutu, was the first black man to lead South Africa’s Anglican Church; he also headed the post-apartheid Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
