Chukwuemeka Izeze, journalist and former managing director/editor-in-chief of The Guardian newspapers, 57, September 11. Born in Ibusa, Delta State, he was educated at Local Authority School, Ibusa, Delta State, 1964-1971; Institute of Continuing Education, Benin-City, 1975-1980; University of Lagos, 1981-1982. He was appointed news editor, Sunday Graphic, Benin-City, 1982-1984; assistant news editor, The Guardian newspaper, 1984-1985; associate editor, New African magazine, London, 1985; news editor, The Guardian on Sunday, 1985-1988 and editor, The Guardian, 1992-1999. Izeze is a member of the Nigeria Union of Journalists and Nigerian Guild of Editors. He was also a member of Vision 2010 committee appointed by the late Sani Abacha, former military head of state.

Psaro Yornamue, journalist and former chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, 52, September 9. Born in Lumene Bangha, Rivers State, he was educated at Kabangha State School, Rivers State, Federal Teacher’s College, Nonwa-Gbam 1966-1980; West African Theological Seminary, WATS, Lagos; Imo State University, 1994-2001 and University of Port Harcourt, 2007-2009. He was appointed chief correspondent, Nigerian Tide, 1982-1984, defunct National Wave, 1988-1990; Nigerian Tribune, 1992-1995; AM News staff correspondent, 1996-1998; The Punch newspapers, Enugu Bureau chief, 1999-2000; The Guardian, Imo State editorial representative, 2000-2001; staff writer, Newswatch magazine Eastern Bureau, 2001-2003, and senior correspondent, Daily Independent, Niger Delta Desk, 2003-2005. He was elected publicity secretary, United Action for Democracy, UAD, south-east in the late general Abacha’s military junta; former general secretary, Amnesty International; former secretary, Civil Liberties Organisation, CLO, Imo and Enugu States’ Best Correspondents Award, 1999.

Marwa

Mohammed Buba Marwa, retired soldier, administrator, businessman and politician, 61, September 9. He was educated at the Nigerian Military School, Zaria; Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna; Armour School, Pakistan; Nigerian Army Signal School, Apapa; Military College of Telecommunication Engineering, India; Advanced Armoured Corps Centre and School, Ahmadnagar, India; Command and Staff College, Jaji; University of Pittisburgh; Harvard Univeristy, USA. Marwa was at various times, troop leader, squadron captain, squadron leader and adjutant. He was aide-de-camp to Theophilus Danjuma, when the latter was chief of army staff; he was appointed military governor of Borno State, 1990 and later, defence adviser, Nigerian Permanent Mission, UN headquarters, New York. He was  military governor of Lagos State, 1996-1998, and director of the defunct Albarka Airline. He was a governorship aspirant under the Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, in the 2012 governorship election in Adamawa State. He is also a governorship aspirant in the 2014 governorship by-election in Adamawa State, on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP.

Igbinedion

Gabriel Igbinedion, businessman, philanthropist, 80, September 11. Born in Okada, Ovia, Edo State, he was educated at Benin Baptist Primary School, 1944-1951; Eko Boys’ High School, Lagos, 1952-1954. He was appointed a teacher by Benin Divisional Council and later became adult education assistant, 1955-1958. He joined the Nigeria Police Force, 1958-1963;  was sales representative and later sales manager, Leventis Group of Companies, 1964-1968; chairman and chief executive, Okada Group of Companies, including Okada Bottling Company, makers of Canada Dry Soft drinks; Okada Farms, Okada Airline, Okada Health Farms, Igbinedion Motors, Okunozee Shipping Line and Okada Housing Estate. He is also proprietor of Igbinedion University, Okada, Edo State.
