Rochas Anayo Okorocha, politician, businessman and philanthropist, 52, September 22. Born in Ogboko, Ideato South local government area of Imo State, he attended St. Joseph’s Primary School, Barkin Ladi, Jos, 1970-1976; Juldaco High School, Jos, 1976-1981 and University of Jos. He is the chairman of Rochas Group of Companies as well as the Rochas Foundation which gave birth to Rochas Foundation College, with campuses in Owerri, Ogboko, Kano, Ibadan and Jos. Okorocha is also the president of the Nigerian Red Cross Society. He has, at various times, been a member of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, the All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP, and the Action Alliance, AA. He had served as special adviser to the President on inter-party relations and chairman, Nigeria Airspace Management Agency, NAMA. He was elected governor of Imo State in April 2011, under the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, before joining the All Progressives Congress, APC in 2013.
Olu Agunloye, physicist, lecturer, 66, September 16. Born in Erusu-Akoko, Ondo State, he was educated at Ondo Boy’s High School, Ondo, 1961-1965; University of Ibadan, 1966-1974; Massaachusetts Institute of Technology, USA. He was appointed lecturer, Department of Physics, University of Ibadan, 1974-1981; executive director, Petramin Nigeria Limited, 1981-1988; managing director, Faagol Instruments Limited, Ibadan, 1981-1988; corps marshal and chief executive, Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, 1988-1995 and personal assistant to minister of power and steel, 1999-2000; former vice-chairman, African Sub-Group; Internal Road Safety Organisation, Belgium; member, Geophysical Association of Nigeria; member, Nigeria Institute of Physics; member, American Geophysical Union; member, European Association of Exploration Geophysics and member Society for Exploration Geophysicists. He later became minister of state for defence.
Samuel Ekhator, administrator, consultant, permanent secretary, and former secretary, Edo State Local Government Service Commission, 69, September 18. He attended St. Stephen’s Anglican School, Odighi; Eghosa Anglican Grammar School, Benin-City, and University of Ibadan. He is presently the president of Eghosa Anglican Grammar School Old Boys’ Association and chairman/ chief executive, SIE Investment and Associate Limited, Benin-City.
Abubakar Dangiwa Umar, retired army colonel, administrator, businessman, 65, September 21. Born in Birnin-Kebbi, Kebbi State, he was educated at Birnin-Kebbi Primary School, 1957-1963; Government College, Sokoto, 1964-1972; Royal Armour School, Kenteucky, 1978-1979; Bayero University, Kano, 1979-1981 and Harvard University, USA, 1988-1989. He joined the Nigerian Army in 1967 and was troop leader, 3 Recce Regiment, NA, in 1972. He was military governor of Kaduna State, 1985-1988.
