Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former governor, Lagos State, 61, March 29. Born in Lagos, he was educated at Government College, Ibadan and the Chicago State University, Chicago, United States of America. Tinubu worked in the United States with Arthur Anderson, Dolethe Haskins and Sell; GTE Services Corporation, Consultants and Fortune 500 Group, USA. He was later appointed senior auditor, treasury Mobil Oil Nigeria Limited. Tinubu started his political career as senator in 1991. He was elected governor of Lagos State in 1999 and re-elected in April 2003, on the platform of Alliance for Democracy, AD. He is the founder and leader of the Action Congress, now Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN.

Haroun Al-Basheed Adamu, political scientist, journalist and publisher, 70, March 30. Born in Makurdi, Benue State, he was educated at the Philips Exeter Academy, New Hami-shire, USA; Yale University, New Haven, USA; London School of Economics and Political Science, University of London and Ahmadu Bello University, ABU, Zaria. He was editorial consultant, Daily Times, and managing director of Triumph Publications Limited, Kano. He also published the Nigerian Economist, now defunct.

Okechukwu Paul Ndibe, civil servant and administrator, 51, March 31. Born in Enugwu-Agidi, Njikoka local government area of Anambra State, he was educated at St Patrick’s College, Emene Enugu, 1973-1978; University of Nigeria, Nsukka, 1985-1988; Institute for Public-Private Partnership, Washington, USA, 1999; University of Ibadan, 2000-2002; Global Maritime and Transportation School, Kings Point, New York, USA, 2004, APEC Flander Training Institute, Antwerp, Belgium, 2007. He has been working in the Nigeria Railway Corporation, NRC, since 1979, and is now the district manager in Enugu.

Babafemi Ojudu, journalist, senator and former manager editor, The New magazine, 53, March 27. He was educated at Emmanuel Primary School, Ado-Ekiti, 1967-1972; Ado Grammar School, Ado-Ekiti, 1973-1977; Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Ile-Ife, 1980-1984; University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos, 1986-1987. Ojudu worked for The Guardian newspapers and African Concord, 1987-1988. He is a co-founder of The News magazine. In 2011, he was elected senator representing Ekiti State under the platform of Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN.

Gabriel Sowemimo, plastic surgeon, 76, March 22. Born in Ilorin, Kwara State, he was educated at Aladura Mission School, Okebola, Ibadan, 1945-1948; King’s College, Lagos, 1950-1956; University College, now University of Ibadan, 1957-1962. He was appointed house physician, Massey Street Children’s Hospital, Lagos, 1962-1963; surgical registrar, Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Lagos, 1970-1974; plastic surgery trainee, Hospital for Sick Children, University College Hospital, London, and Mount Vernon Centre for Plastic Surgery, Middlesex, UK, 1973-1974. He is a member, Metropolitan Club, Lagos, and past chairman, Apapa Committee of Gentlemen.

Olusola Oladapo Fafowora, diplomat and administrator, 72, March 29. Born in Lagos, he was educated at CMS Grammar School, Lagos, 1954-1958; Nigerian College of Arts, Science and Technology, University College, now University of Ibadan, 1961-1964; School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, UK, 1965-1966; Trinity College, Oxford University, UK, 1969-1972. Fafowora started his diplomatic career in 1964. He became second secretary, Nigeria High Commission, London, 1966-1968; secretary, Nigeria High Commission, The Hague, Holland; chairman, United Nations Economic Committee, 1982-1983; chairman, Africa Group at the United Nations; fellow, Royal Commonwealth Society, 1968.
