Boko Haram late on Monday launched an attack on the town of Michika in Adamawa State, throwing the entire community in commotion as citizens took shelter in the bush.

District Head of Duhu and surrounding communities, Mohammed Sanusi, told our correspondents that the insurgents gained entrance into the town through the rear and caused mayhem, shooting indiscriminately while efforts were being made by the military men stationed in the area to curtail the incursion.

The town under attack, which is not far from the dreaded Sambisa Forest base of the insurgents, has four polling units in Bazza Margi, Jigalambu, Moda/Diaka/Ghenjuwa and Sina/Kamale/Kwande where supplementary governorship elections will be held on March 23, 2019.

There are over 11,000 votes being contested for by the candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party and the All Progressives Congress in the rescheduled poll.

The District Head said, “There’s shooting right now going on in Michika by Boko Haram who sneaked into Michika town from the back of Kofar Borno and Kofar Adamawa, launching attacks on the entire Michika town.

“There’s pandemonium now in Michika but the swift response from the Nigerian military stationed in Michika, Gulak and Madagali has contained the insurgents from gaining access into the heart of the town.”

Michika has enjoyed relative peace following its recapture from the insurgents in 2014 by the Nigerian military, although neighbouring Shuwa town was attacked by two female bombers two weeks ago in an attack targeted at worshippers inside St Pius Catholic Church.

The bombs however exploded a few meters from the church with one of the bombers killed. Casualties in the latest attack had yet to be ascertained as of press report.
