POLICE on Tuesday charged a 55-year-old businessman, Wesmor Mark, with alleged N1 million fraud and arraigned him before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.

The defendant, a resident of Ajao Estate in Lagos, is facing a two-count charge bordering on stealing and obtaining money under false pretext.

The Police Prosecutor, ASP Akeem Raji, said the defendant allegedly obtained N1 million from one Mr Victor Erumaka with the assurance that he would supply him charcoal, a representation he knew to be false.

Raji told the court that the defendant committed the offences on June 30, 2016, in Ago Okota, Lagos.

The prosecutor alleged that on-demand by the complainant for a refund of his money, the defendant issued him a dud cheque of N500,000 “which the bank did not honour because there was no money in the defendant’s account.

“The defendant stole the complainant’s money and efforts made to retrieve the money from him proved abortive.”

He said the offences contravened Sections 287, 314 and 321(b) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs O.I. Adelaja, admitted the defendant to N200,000 bail with two sureties in like sum.

Adelaja ruled that the sureties must be gainfully employed and should show evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

The Magistrate adjourned the case until March 8 for mention. (NAN)
