THE Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons has solicited the cooperation of the Nigeria Customs Service to mop up illegal arms circulating in the country.
Haruna Mohammed, North West Coordinator of the centre, made the appeal on Thursday when he paid a courtesy visit on the Customs Area Controller, Kaduna Command, Mr Salihu Yakubu.
Mohammed said that 700 small arms and light weapons mopped up from the zone have been handed to the centre, while about 1500 weapons and 14000 ammunition were received at the national level.
The coordinator said the Customs Service contributed a lot in getting the weapons, adding that the visit was to strengthen the relationship between the two organisations.
Responding, the customs controller pledged that the service would continue to work with the centre to tackle the proliferation of small arms and light weapons in the country.
Yakubu also said that the command would continue to tackle all smuggling activities in its area of operation to safeguard the economy and security of the country.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the centre was established on Nov. 3, 2021 by President Muhammadu Buhari to make Nigeria an illicit arms-free society.
Its mandate include the prevention and control of small arms and light weapons in order to strengthen peace and security in Nigeria. (NAN)
