CHINESE Foreign Minister Qin Gang said China would continue to pursue an independent foreign policy of peace and implement mutually beneficial strategies.

Qin said this at a news conference on the sidelines of an annual parliament meeting in Beijing.

“As the world is undergoing major changes unseen in a century, China will continue to pursue the independent foreign policy of peace and implement a mutually beneficial strategy of opening up.

“China will always be a builder of world peace, a contributor to global development, and a defender of the international order,” he said.

He added that China-Russia relations were based on non-alliance.

According to him, the Chinese modernisation strategy offers solutions to many challenges limiting the development of humanity.

He said that modernising a country of more than 1.4 billion people could only be considered an unprecedented feat in human history and one of profound global significance in itself.

“It busts the myth that modernisation is westernisation.

“It creates a new form of human advancement, and provides an important source of inspiration for the world, especially developing countries.

“The relationship between China and Russia is based on the principles of non-alliance, non-confrontation, and non-targeting of third parties,” Qin said.

“With China and Russia working together, the world will have the driving force towards ensuring multipolarity and greater democracy in international relations.

“Global strategic balance and stability will be better ensured,” the foreign minister added.

He expressed the hope that both Russia and China would work towards mutual benefits.

Qin described U.S.’ perception of China as its primary rival and biggest geopolitical challenge as distorted.

The Chinese foreign minister observed that U.S.’ views regarding China are the way they are because of the Western country’s “deviation from rational and healthy policy towards China”.

“The China-U.S. relationship should be determined by common interests and shared responsibilities of the two countries in view of the friendship between the Chinese and American people, rather than by U.S. domestic politics.

“We hope the U.S. government will listen to calls of the two peoples, get rid of its strategic anxiety of ‘threat inflation,’ abandon the ‘zero-sum’ Cold War mentality, and refuse to be hijacked by political correctness,” he maintained.

He urged the U.S. to honor its commitments and work with China to explore the right way to get along with each other for the benefit of both countries and the entire world.

While saying that China should be allowed to resolve the Taiwan question, the foreign minister stressed that no other country had the right to interfere in the matter.

He underscored the need for calm, rationality, and dialogue to arrive at a sustainable solution to the Ukraine crisis, which he termed a tragedy that could have been avoided.

Speaking on China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), Qin said it was a high-quality public good initiated by his country and jointly built by its partners, with the benefits designed to be shared with the rest of the world.

“The BRI Belt has attracted participation of more than 75 per cent of countries in the world and 32 international organisations.

“It has created some 420,000 jobs in countries along the route, and helped lift nearly 40 million people out of poverty over the past decade,” he said. (NAN)
