MEMBER representing Isoko Federal Constituency, House of Representatives, Hon. Jonathan Ukodhiko has said a switch to compressed natural gas (CNG) as alternative to petroleum, would mark a watershed in the development of gas and improvement of electricity in Nigeria.

Ukodhiko made the assertion at the public investigative hearing of the House of Representatives Adhoc Committee on the recent increase in petrol pump prices held in the National Assembly Complex, Abuja.

In his brief remark, the Isoko federal lawmaker said, “one of the purposes of the meeting of the adhoc committee is to find out immediate solutions on how to reduce the suffering of the people.”

Ukodhiko, a professional engineer, stated that, “I strongly believe, and I agree that, Compressed Natural Gas, the CNG is the way to go in the development of our gas in the country.

“But, you should also know that, the problem is not converting into CNG. The biggest problem is developing the gas by bringing it from the ground in order for the people to process it.”

Ukodhiko, who is the Deputy Chairman, House Committee on Science and Technology while giving his remark at the public hearing, frowned at the attitude of oil multinational companies of not developing gas during their oil exploration operations for power generation.

“Presently, as we all know, majority of the Oil companies operating in the country are shying away from the development of gas.

“As we all know, gas development is an expensive venture. But then, we need to bring it from the ground before we can make use of it . We are not here to argue whether it’s possible or not possible to go into the CNG as alternative.

“I agree, it is easier to convert to CNG. What we need to do is to go to the various places where gas are being flared in all the locations, flow stations.

“We can set up small modular CNG conversion plants there not only to convert to CNG, but also generate electricity from it. This is so because we can’t make use of it completely.” Ukodhiko added
